Save-A-Lot to open new distribution facility in North Carolina
Save-A-Lot, a hard-discount grocery retailer and a wholly owned subsidiary of Supervalu, has plans to build a new 325,000sqft distribution facility in Lexington, North Carolina.
The $24m project is the outcome of partnership with the state of North Carolina and its One North Carolina Fund, the North Carolina Department of Commerce, Davidson County and the City of Lexington.
The new facility will be located in Lexington’s Business Center and is slated to open in December 2011.
The food distribution center will utilize green technologies, including lights that only operate when a person is present and an HVAC system that uses smart thermostats.
Save-A-Lot operates nearly 1,200 stores in 39 states, and has plans to double the number of stores it operates across the nation over the next five years.
Currently, there are 17 Save-A-Lot stores in North Carolina, including one in Lexington. The company plans to open an additional eight stores in the state this year, and six stores in South Carolina.
Save-A-Lot president and CEO Bill Shaner said that the Lexington distribution center will enable the company to serve its current stores more efficiently and at the same time, grow its business in the region.
Save-A-Lot offers store brand and national brand products, plus fresh meat and farm-fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy, along with some grocery and household items.
